Small Wars Foundation was formed as a non-profit to continue the initial successes of Small Wars Journal and better serve the Small Wars Community of Interest.  The final table slap came, appropriately, in a meeting at a bar.  Unfortunately, Tun Tavern was not convenient at the time.

The certificate of incorporation from the Virginia State Corporation Commission was issued on January 16, 2008.  Per its articles of incorporation, Small Wars Foundation is "formed exclusively for charitable, educational, and literary purposes within the meaning of section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code" and all its assets are permanently dedicated to exempt purposes.

Small Wars Foundation has filed IRS Form 1023 for federal recognition of the 501(c)(3) exemption.  The complete filing:  Part 1 (base form + notes), Part 2 (attachments 2-9), Part 3 (attachment 10).

Small Wars Foundation purchased Small Wars Journal from Small Wars Journal, LLC, and assumed operation of the site on June 1, 2008.  Small Wars Foundation has been approved for a grant from Smith Richardson Foundation, contingent only upon federal recognition of the exemption.  Major expansion is planned, but on hold pending the federal recognition.  A decision is hoped for early this fall.  There are additional details on these items in the 1023 filing above.

Small Wars Foundation will post future filings, information returns, etc. here.  We are committed to transparency and will meet or exceed guidelines for disclosure.
